The Sound of Smart Things

How to give form to the invisible

The Sound of Smart Things – 2nd year Master 2021

Theme: Sound design, Human-Computer Interaction, Smart Things
Expertise Areas: Technology & Realization, User & Society, Creativity & Aesthetics, Math Data & Computing

As smart object slowly get more common in our living space, so become their sounds. I was challenged with the question how to use sound to give form to the interface between the digital and the physical world. Through exploring different approaches to using sound I put together the soundscape of the “Smart Book”. Bringing the theoretical knowledge from the course The sound of smart things (DCM180) where I learned how to explore the strengths of the auditory modality within the inherently multimodal and holistic experience of our digital/physical environment to practice.

In this course we research the role of sound in the design of, and interaction with Systems of Smart Things.

I explored sound design in the form of:
– speech and non-speech sound;
– located and ambient sound;
– music and soundscapes;
– auditory avatars;
– modeling and prototyping sound.
